You need these periodic checkups so your practitioner can help ensure you and your baby stay healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"large_copy\">Make sure you go to each checkup, even if you feel good. (Bring your water bottle!)<\/li>\n<li>Weigh you and have your belly measured.<\/li>\n<li>Listen for your baby\u2019s heartbeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your first prenatal care appointment will most likely be between weeks 7 and 12. Most dental care can be safely performed during pregnancy. But be sure to tell your dentist you\u2019re pregnant. Getting your teeth cleaned can help if you\u2019re experiencing bleeding gums \u2014 a common symptom in pregnancy![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][divider line_type=&#8221;Full Width Line&#8221; line_thickness=&#8221;1&#8243; divider_color=&#8221;default&#8221;][toggles style=&#8221;default&#8221;][toggle color=&#8221;Default&#8221; title=&#8221;First prenatal visit&#8221;][vc_column_text]This first visit will probably be the longest because there\u2019s a lot to cover! Even though some of this information may already be in your medical record, it is important to verify and update it to assess your current state of health and any risk factors for pregnancy complications.<\/p>\n<p>To make sure you and your baby are off to a healthy start, we\u2019ll:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>give you a physical exam, including a breast exam, pelvic exam, and a Pap test, if you\u2019re due for one<\/li>\n<li>take an ultrasound to see how far along you are in the pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>discuss your medical history, family history, and health habits<\/li>\n<li>ask about the medications or supplements you are currently taking<\/li>\n<li>explain the benefits of breastfeeding for both you and your baby<\/li>\n<li>talk with you about how you\u2019re feeling physically and emotionally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During your follow-up visits, your practitioner will monitor your health as well as the development of your baby.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=&#8221;Default&#8221; title=&#8221;Your first ultrasound&#8221;][vc_column_text]The most exciting part of this visit will be seeing your baby for the first time. At Kaiser Permanente, we do ultrasounds early so, we can give you a more accurate estimate of your baby\u2019s due date.<\/p>\n<p>If you come in when you\u2019re less than 6 weeks pregnant, you won\u2019t be able to see much yet. But after that, we should be able to see your little one\u2019s developing ears and mouth, and black dots where the eyes and nostrils will be.<\/p>\n<p>The short stubs that will become your baby\u2019s arms and legs might also be visible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll also listen to your baby\u2019s heartbeat together!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At 100 to 160 beats per minute, it beats about twice as fast as yours.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing we\u2019ll do at this stage is talk to you about how you\u2019re feeling. Many people have heard about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/maternity\/baby-101\/postpartum-care\/pregnancy-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">postpartum depression<\/a>, but depression is also very common <strong>during<\/strong> pregnancy. We\u2019ll check in with you about your emotional health often \u2014 if you need help, we\u2019ll connect you with the right care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting your pregnancy ultrasound<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To start planning your prenatal care journey, we\u2019ll talk to you about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/maternity\/healthy\/prenatal\/tests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screening tests for common birth defects<\/a>. Depending on your family health history, you may choose to have no tests, one test, or several tests \u2014 it\u2019s up to you and your partner.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of your partner \u2014 bring your partner! We\u2019re here to support him or her, too.
